Over the course of the summer, your lawn endures heavy foot traffic, heat stress, and natural soil compaction. When soil becomes compacted, the roots of your grass literally suffocate. They cannot absorb oxygen, water, or the vital nutrients required for survival.
Core aeration is the mechanical process of removing thousands of small plugs of soil from your lawn. This instantly relieves soil compaction, allowing oxygen, water, and fertilizer to penetrate deep into the root zone. A well-aerated lawn develops deeper, stronger root systems that are significantly more resilient against drought and disease.
Aeration creates the perfect environment for seed germination. By immediately broadcasting high-quality grass seed over the freshly aerated lawn, the seeds fall directly into the protective holes created by the aerator.
This process, known as overseeding, introduces superior grass varieties to your existing turf. It thickens the lawn, fills in bare patches, and naturally crowds out aggressive weeds like crabgrass before they even have a chance to sprout.
For cool-season grasses typically found in our region, early fall is the absolute best time for aeration and overseeding. The soil is still warm enough for rapid seed germination, but the blistering summer heat has passed, allowing the delicate new grass to establish strong roots before the winter freeze.
The success of your overseeding entirely depends on your watering schedule for the first three weeks. The seed must remain constantly moist, but not flooded. Plan to lightly water the lawn two to three times per day until the new grass reaches a height of two inches, after which you can return to a normal, deep-watering schedule.
